Martha Shoffner - 1882 -1954

Martha wa born to Pleasant and Mariah in 1882. Not sure of her exact birthday but it is believed that she was the 3rd child after Robert and Lizzie. It is also likley that she wa the first of the Shoffner children to leave Burlington North Carolina located in Alamance County.

We know Martha was around 24 years old when she married John Morris Carter on June 6th 1906. They resided on Liberty Avenue in Brooklyn for many years. We believe they had 12 children in total.

John Morris Carter was a man of great faith and served as Deacon. Most knew him as Deacon Carter. He and Martha shared their love for over 48 years. They had a host of children and grandchildren. She also had an abundance of nieces and nephews in Brooklyn, Buffalo and Burlington that affectionatley called her "Ant Mat". We also know that her mother Mariah and older brother Robert joined her in New York around the1920s after her father Pleasants death.

Not sure of the exact date of John and Martha's death. However we do know that Martha passed away first. In those days the loved one was laid out for visitataion in the family home. It is said that the night Martha was laid to rest in their home, Deacon Carter said his last and final goodnite to his wife and went to bed. He passed away in his sleep the very same night. The couple was loved and adored by their family, friends and community. They were both laid to rest in 1954.
