Peter and Sharon Wharton gave birth to Mariah Wharton on May 3, 1854, in the State of Virginia. We don't know much about her parents yet, and we are not sure how she and Pleasant meant. Maybe we will discover more about their story one day as more family share their memories. We believe they had a wonderful love story because we know Mariah married pleasant on her 21st birthday.

On May 3, 1875, Pleasant and Mariah jumped the broom. They began their family shortly after. We believe Mariah and Pleasant had 14 children in total. Seven girls and seven boys. These children were born on the cuff of slavery. Racism and low wages for hard work were the norms. However, Pleasant was a hard worker, and he and Mariah seemed to have made ends meet for the family.

We know some of their children moved to Buffalo, and some moved to Brooklyn. We also know that after Pleasants death, Mariah lived with her daughter Martha (Ant Mat) in Brooklyn until her death on September 2, 1950. She lived a long life and experienced a lot. Born during slavery and lived as a free woman. Married and widowed and living in both the South and the North. We honor her life, memory, and legacy.
